Q & A Around the Special Election
Why are we having a special election in 2025?
In the 2024 campaign we determined that our DFL opponent – recruited, endorsed, and supported by the MN State DFL - did not meet the statutory qualification to be a candidate for State Representative in House District 40B (HD40B.) After the November 5th election we contested the election on the grounds that my DFL opponent was not qualified because he was not living in the HD40B district. Residency for state representative candidates is required under the MN Constitution and state statute.
Judicial ruling: Judge Leonardo Castro, Ramsey County District Court, agreed with our claims and ruled that my DFL opponent was not a resident of House District 40B and therefore unqualified. Judge Castro’s strong ruling vacated the 2024 election.
The FIRST special election was cancelled by the MN Supreme Court. The new election date is March 11, 2025.
